What some of you may not know is that we started our charity in 1989. It is still to this day called MLE Training and Research Society which is what operates our school. We followed up by opening the Variety Learning Center which we do business as (dba) under the society. In 2003 we opened the School dba Mediated Learning Academy.
When we opened the school it was a school for all children and we only had some special needs children. Our main approach was Mediated Learning as it fits that mandate. We have morphed and changed over the 17 years we have been here to now only having special needs students and to be designated as a Special Needs school by the BC Ministry of Education a few years ago. There have been substantial changes over the years.
One of the issues we have always had as a school has been that people are very confused by the name. I am often asked to explain what Mediated Learning is, which is very difficult in a few minutes. It is a psychological approach and philosophy which requires a great deal of training to be able to teach effectively. In addition, we have had many people phone and ask if we do such things as meditation or give medication, or mediation like a lawyer, and the confusion due to our name.
It was also brought to our attention by the former Board President of 10 years that our name is a large hindrance in fundraising. He suggested a name change would benefit us.
Therefore, with all of this in mind, we have decided to make a change that better reflects who the school is today.
As of August 1st, the school will be renamed: Greater Heights Learning Academy.
Mediated Learning will still be taught here as part of our programming, all address and phone numbers etc will remain unchanged.
Our website will change to www.ghla.ca (although you will be re-pointed from our old website) and example email addresses will be: email@example.com, Kjeffrey@ghla.ca and Mwhite@ghla.ca etc.
If you receive autism funding you will need to contact Andrea to receive the new forms and authorize the new name or do this online. Cheques etc. of course would be made out to the new name.
We look forward to this fresh new start for our school!
We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and we will see you on September 3rd.
